The Effect of Trypsin Dosage on Fermented Banana Stem and Lamtoro Leaf-Based Feed on the Performance of Local Balinese Pigs

Abstract

Balinese pigs are among the livestock commodities raised by the community. However, their maintenance remains traditional, using available feed ingredients from their surroundings. As a result, the appearance of Balinese pigs is not optimal, with indicators suggesting their growth is still below the NRC standard. Under such management, local pigs can only gain 180-260 grams per day per head, which is below the NRC standard of 500-750 grams. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase weight gain by improving feed quality through fermentation. This study used a completely randomized design with feed treatments fermented for 28 days: 0 g of fermented Trypsin (F0), 2 g of Trypsin (F1), and 4 g of Trypsin (F2). Each treatment involved three Balinese or local pigs of weaning age, 2-3 months old, weighing 10-12 kg. The variables observed included initial and final body weight, weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, and if significant differences (P < 0.05) were found, Duncan's Least Significant Difference Test was applied. The results showed that adding 4 grams of Trypsin supplement or prebiotic resulted in the highest final weight of 24.38 kg per head. It also produced the highest weight gain of 15.60 kg per head and a daily weight gain of 278.57 grams per head. Additionally, the addition of 4 grams of Trypsin supplement resulted in the highest feed intake of 71.25 kg per head.
